Microsoft Dynamics NAV 2009 SP1 introduces several changes to the way files are packaged on the product installation media, making it no longer possible to install two versions of the Classic client on the same computer using Setup.

The repackaging provides the following benefits and improvements:

Reduced size of the product media
Ability to release new languages more quickly
Standard method for supporting installation of additional languages.

In prior versions of Microsoft Dynamics NAV, each country version was a unique product with its own installation program. With Microsoft Dynamics 2009 SP1, you install language modules over the base product.

Most customers will see benefits from the repackaging, but there are implications for partners who need to be able to run different versions of the Classic client side-by-side on the same computer. This is not possible using Microsoft Dynamics 2009 SP1 Setup.

Side-by-Side Classic Client Install

If you need to be able to run the current (Dynamics NAV 2009 SP1) and an older version of the Classic client on the same computer, you must install the Microsoft Dynamics NAV 2009 SP1 Classic client from the Microsoft Dynamics NAV Classic.msi file in the CsideClient folder on the installation media.

Note: Side-by-side installation of the Microsoft Dynamics NAV 2009 SP1 Classic client with earlier versions of the Classic client is not supported for customers in a production environment.

Follow these steps to install the Microsoft Dynamics NAV 2009 SP1 Classic client without removing previous versions of the Classic client:

  1. On a computer where an earlier version of the Classic client has already been installed, install any prerequisites for the Microsoft Dynamics NAV 2009 SP1 Classic client. You can find these on the installation media in the Prerequisite Components folder:
    • Microsoft .NET Framework 3.5 SP1
    • Microsoft Report Viewer 2008
    • Microsoft Core XML Services (MSXML) 6.0 Service Pack 1
    • Microsoft Visual C++ 2008 Runtime Components
  2. Install the Microsoft Dynamics NAV 2009 SP1 Classic client by running Microsoft Dynamics NAV Classic.msi, located in the CSideClient folder on the installation media.
  3. In the Installation Wizard, on the Program Upgrade page, click New.
  4. Install language modules for the Classic client by running ClassicClient.Local.XX.msi, which is located in the Installers\XX\CSide folders, where XX is the language code, for example, DE, ES etc.
  5. Repeat step 4 for all the languages you need to install

Some local versions of Microsoft Dynamics NAV 2009 SP1 require additional installation steps. The German version, for example, requires installation of Elster components:

  6. Install the Elster component by running Elster.msi in the folder Installers\Common\Elster on the installation media
